Campus and vibes

Current Student

Columbia is a wonderful school for driven students. The academics can be demanding/rigorous, but the school is really supportive of its students. The location, New York City, is unmatched for career opportunities (finance, consulting, and law are typical career paths for students), outings with friends, and learning how to "adult."

In addition, having New York City as my environment not only gives my time there many options outside the walls of the university, it also has opened doors for me to have unique opportunities to learn about different communities and cultures, as well as provide me opportunities for internships and jobs, and help broaden my worldview. However, I have also felt the pressure of the high-stress nature of the environment, as well as having difficulty navigating the administrative processes of the university, particularly in terms of receiving and accessing resources for academic advising, funding sources, and mental health support.

Current Student

Columbia's campus is secure, and I've never felt unsafe wandering around campus. That said, Columbia's fast-paced, competitive culture and NYC can be a bit overwhelming for some people. The Core Curriculum that all students in the College are required to take is cool, but it can give you less freedom to explore fields of study. I'm in the College, but my friends in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) recommend it (even though most people don't associate Columbia with STEM). The biggest complaint students have, other than the Core, is the lack of campus culture.
