I am an English major and the English department is just outstanding. They are caring and intelligent and sincerely want the best for the cadets. This is absolutely not the case for all majors though. Some don't care about cadet wellbeing at all and actively try to thin out the number of people in the majors.

VMI is a very welcoming place. In my first year, it was hard with the miliary training, but no one there wants to see you fail. No matter how much you get yelled at, they really do care about your success. Everyone does their best to see you succeed.

About Virginia Military Institute

VMI enforces a strict honor system and adherence to rules, contributing to a very safe campus environment with virtually no crime. The culture emphasizes mutual respect and responsibility among cadets, which helps maintain security and trust. Cadets have been posted as sentinels guarding the barracks 24 hours a day, seven days a week while school is in session since 1839.

The Institute Honors Program enriches the academic experience of VMI's outstanding cadets through activities that encourage intellectual inquiry. Honors Cadets have access to mini-grants, support for senior research, and special events. Those who complete the program are certified as Distinguished Graduates with Institute Honors at commencement.

VMI has a small but globally diverse campus community, with 2% international students. The Institute offers cross-cultural learning opportunities and welcomes students from various countries.
